Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can see your osteopath whenever you like. The only time a GP referral may be required is if you pay for treatment through private health insurance. Please check with your provider before booking.
How many sessions will I need?
This depends on your diagnosis. Most people feel a significant benefit after the first session but this may not always be the case. On average a course of 3 or 4 treatments produces effective long-term results but it really depends on how long you have been suffering and the severity of your symptoms. In many cases people find it helpful to have ongoing treatment every few weeks or months to maintain healthy body function once the symptoms have improved. However, some people prefer to wait until it hurts again before having the next session. All this is discussed and explained in detail during the first consultation. The goal is always to educate you in the best ways to avoid future injury. So the more you practice the advice, the fewer sessions you will need…
How much does it cost?
The normal cost of a session is £45. Please go to FEES to see the latest prices and special offers.
What should I wear?
Don't worry, you will NOT be asked to undress completely down to your underwear. As long as the symptomatic area is accessible you can wear whatever you feel comfortable in. Here are some suggestions below:
MEN: Treatment is often most effective if the area in question is exposed. For back and upper body problems men may be asked to remove tops but may wear a vest or loose fiiting T-shirt if preferred. For lower body complaints shorts or loose fitting joggers are the best option.
WOMEN: Treatment is often most effective if the area in question is exposed. For back and upper body problems women will NOT be obliged to remove tops completely, often the best thing to wear is a thin-strapped vest top or sports bra. You will never be asked to remove or unclip your bra. For lower body complaints either shorts, loose fitting joggers or elasticated / stretchy leggings are the best option.
Is it painful?
Most people find treatment very relaxing and enjoyable. But it really depends on your diagnosis. The goal of treatment is always to be as effective as possible. This may mean that if your symptoms are in a sensitive area such as in the calf or near the ribs, you may experience some discomfort. However, most of the time the experience is not painful. Many people describe a "good pain" or "relieving pain" sensation. Before any potentially painful technique is performed you will always be informed on the likelihood of it hurting and offered another option should you prefer. Cranial osteopathy is exremely gentle and pain-free.
Do I need a chaperone?
Some people like to have someone else in the house on the first appointment but if you live alone this is not essential. The success of treatment is often based on how comfortable and relaxed the patient feels. If you suspect you would feel more comfortable with a chaperone then please ask a friend or relative to attend. It's not a problem whatsoever. Ultimately, you are in control and if there is any aspect of the treatment you find unsettling then please let us know.
Children under the age of 16 are required by law to be chaperoned.
